Whether a specific hearing is virtual depends on the court, the judge, and the type of proceeding, not on personal preference. Always confirm the format for each hearing directly with your attorney rather than assuming.

Can I use AI as my attorney during a Zoom hearing?+

This carries real risk. Courts have sanctioned attorneys and canceled proceedings after discovering AI-generated content containing fabricated information, including a 2026 federal case where a judge canceled an entire trial and barred attorneys from the court for two years after both sides submitted AI-generated material with invented case citations. Are trials held over Zoom in Miami-Dade?+

No. Under the Eleventh Judicial Circuit's Administrative Order 21-09, jury and non-jury trials are generally required to be held in person. Evidentiary hearings and motions to suppress are also generally conducted in person. Motion calendars and certain other proceedings are more commonly held by Zoom, but this varies by division and judge.

Can I appear at a Florida court hearing from my phone?+

What happens if I get disconnected during my hearing?+

Can I be removed from a virtual hearing?+

Download Zoom in advance

Install the free Zoom application on your phone, tablet, or computer well before your hearing date. Do not wait until the day of your hearing to download it for the first time.

Find your hearing link and Meeting ID

In Miami-Dade, Zoom links are delivered through courtMAP, the Eleventh Circuit's case scheduling system, typically arriving by email about 3 weeks before your hearing date. If you have not received a link close to your hearing date, search the Eleventh Circuit's Virtual Courtroom Directory directly, or check your own circuit's directory if your case is outside Miami-Dade.

Test your camera and microphone

Open Zoom and test your audio and video before the hearing day. If using a phone or tablet, headphones with a built-in microphone generally produce clearer audio than the device's built-in speaker and microphone.

Have identification ready

Some Florida courts require unrepresented parties and witnesses to submit a copy of a photo ID in advance of the hearing. Check your specific court's instructions, and have the same ID available during the hearing itself.

Log in early

Join the Zoom meeting several minutes before your scheduled time. You may be placed in a waiting room until the host admits you or your case is called.

Rename yourself correctly

Once admitted, rename yourself in Zoom with your actual name so the court and clerk can identify you. If you have an attorney, follow their specific instructions on how to display your name and role.

A collared shirt, blouse, or equivalent. Avoid t-shirts, tank tops, athletic wear, and anything you would not otherwise wear to a courthouse.

Florida court guidance specifically recommends solid colors over busy patterns, since patterns can distort or flicker on camera. If wearing a tie, choose a solid one rather than a patterned one.

Camera, Lighting, and Location

Florida courts publish specific technical guidance on how to appear on camera. A few adjustments make a real difference.

Set your camera at eye level or slightly above, and look at the camera itself when speaking rather than at your own image on the screen.

Light from a window behind you can silhouette your face and make you difficult to see. Face a window or position a lamp in front of you instead, so light falls on your face rather than behind you.

Choose a neutral background

A solid, plain wall is ideal. Be aware of what is visible behind you, since anything in frame is visible to the court, the other side, and anyone else attending the hearing.

Turn off any video filters, virtual backgrounds, or beautification effects before joining. Confirm your camera is showing your actual appearance, not a filtered or altered version.

Find a quiet, non-mobile location

Join from a quiet indoor space with minimal background noise, not a moving vehicle, a public place, or anywhere with significant distractions.

Never appear from a moving vehicle. Federal and state court guidance both require participants to join from a stationary, non-mobile location. Appearing while driving can result in removal from the hearing.
